"By Numbers" you have Justin Hart at 35, didn't he get 40. If so, you will need a bar for the (2) 40's.
The official roster I downloaded on 1/11/08 still showed him at 35. Do you have another source?
Joe, I was going by your "Roster By Numbers" page, at the bottom, the March 20, 2007 section where you had Justin Hart changing from 35 to 40. It looks like he went back to 35 this year. Is that correct? Thanks. And once again, Joe. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. It definitely shows. C.C.
CC, I thoought I just missed it, but over on the right under "August 6, 2007," you will see that Justin Hart did change from 40 back to 35. Joe.

Although many sites show Carroll as a WR, a couple of months ago he said that USC was recruiting him as a CB. Unless something has changed, he probably should be listed as a CB.

Both Rivals and Scout show Burfict as a MLB. They are split with Simmons (Scout MLB and Rivals OLB). I would move Burfict to MLB and if you need to balance things, move Simmons outside.
Some positions seem to be taking shape in spring practice that are different than originally listed. However, things are so fluid that it does not seem worthwhile to move players around until a new depth chart is released. I will wait until then to comment on players.

-The long-snapping competition may be the most open battle on the team, although it looks like one player has locked up the field goal snapping duties.
“Cooper Stephenson has really picked up the snapping on the field goal team,” said Carroll. “The timing is starting to come together, and that’s a big step forward for us.

Greg Katz O/NSO Column:
The Not So Obvious – Coach Ruel, who told the O/NSO that he’s not quite ready to name a starting offensive line, says the biggest surprises have been the play of junior Charles Brown at left tackle and junior offensive right guard Alex Parsons.
Most thought that Brown would be ticketed for right tackle, but the coach says he likes the way the former Diamond Ranch High star guards the quarterback’s blind side. Ruel also added that junior tackle Nick Howell started slow but "has come back nicely."
Addressing some of his charges in particular, Ruel said, “Kris O’Dowd, of all the guys, is really making the calls. Jeff Byers is such a great part of what we do. Don’t worry about what we are experimenting on our right side, we want our guys to be interchangeable. That’s why we have moved Alex Parsons to some right tackle from guard. In fact, before we finish, we’ll even try to get Parsons some snaps at center. We’ll see how it all plays out.
Hey, don’t forget Thomas Herring, although he’s not out here today. We did miss not having guard Zack Heberer and Butch Lewis. They’re both now back in the mix. I wouldn’t want to name starters.
I want every player to mix with the first unit. If a player thinks he’s only on the No. 2 unit, he’ll play like a No. 2.”

Moala adjusting to nose guard
By Scott Wolf, Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 04/10/2008 11:02:00 PM PDT
USC is not changing many players' positions during spring practice, but a possibly significant move took place this week.
Defensive tackle Fili Moala, who started all 13 games last season, switched to nose guard, previously filled by All-American Sedrick Ellis.
"He may be our top player right there," USC coach Pete Carroll said of Moala.
Moala would shake things up considerably at nose guard. Entering spring practice, Averell Spicer, Christian Tupou, Derek Simmons and DaJohn Harris were competing at the spot. But Spicer missed spring practice with a knee injury, leaving mostly inexperienced players until Moala moved over to the position.
"We've done some shuffling on the defensive line," Carroll said. "We want to make sure we have as much information as possible."
No starter: Carroll said he did not expect to name a starting tailback after spring practice and would wait until the fall. Stafon Johnson, Joe Mc- Knight, C.J. Gable, Allen Bradford, Marc Tyler and Broderick Green are all competing for playing time.
"It's wide open," Carroll said. "There's no need to do anything now."
Green enjoyed his best practice of the spring, according to Carroll.
"By far, he was at his best," Carroll said.

When are the Trojans going to get some good d-backs? This recruiting class of d-backs sucks and the defensive backfield has been our only weakness for the past 5 years. Taylor Mays is the most over rated safety I have seen in two years as I seen him miss so many tackles and also allow people to get by him so many times that he should be benched.

Line shuffle: During last Saturday's scrimmage, the offensive line missed 14 assignments. In an average scrimmage, it usually misses less than five.
"I'm getting frustrated because I want them to take the next step," offensive line coach Pat Ruel said.
Ruel said the depth chart, which will be released today, is still not firm. Center Kris O'Dowd and left guard Jeff Byers will start, but the left tackle spot is a battle between Charles Brown and Butch Lewis, while Lewis and Alex Parsons are competing at right tackle. Thomas Herring and Zack Heberer are competing at right guard.

Mays & Ellison would start on any team in the country. Wright is deluxe and Pinkard was the best player on the team before the injury. I think PC may know a tad bit more about football than you, so when he says our secondary is the best he's had......you may want to listen to him.
BTW - Mays (still only a junior) was a beast at the huddle and I look forward to him carrying that momentum into the season and garnering 1st team All-American status. Too bad PC can't recruit DBs. LOL

Couple of changes made- Andrew Weiss has switched to DE according to the Trojans Official Website. Spencer Vigoren is back on the squad as a WR. Garrett Nolan, a junior out of Northridge will play as an OG. His previous schools were Moorpark JC, Holy Cross, and Chaminade. Clay Matthews Jr. should be put in as a DE regarding from a previous entry. And Goodman and Stephenson should be awarded with scholarships also from a previous comment.

I guess you didn't realize USC has a verbal commit from Matt Barkley out of Mater Dei HS who is the #1 rated QB as well as #1 recruit overall in the class of '09. Also, Sanchez is a JR, Mustain is a SO, and Aaron Corp is a FR so USC is well stocked at QB for several yrs to come.
I think that you're looking in the wrong place. From my notes at least, Barkley has been in the charts since 2/10/08. Regards, Joe.

Were you referring to the '08 recruiting class of DBs? If so I disagree...any time you get a kid like TJ Bryant out of Florida your DB class doesn't suck. However, I do agree with you somewhat that Mays is overrated at times. He seems to go after the big hit instead of just making the play. I hope OG Money is right and he has a big yr earning all-american honors, but so far his consistency has been a little disappointing for someone with his size, speed, and talent.

Stacy Bradley interviewed Pat Ruel on Rivals. According to Pat Ruel, LT - Steve Catina (phonetic spelling) is competing. Ruel says that he graduated from UC Davis and transferred as a graduate student. I have no clue if he is on scholarship or not. LG - Byers has had "flu like symptoms" for a couple of months. In his absence, Parsons is competing at the position (not right tackle). My speculation, after Byers comes back, Parsons will end up at a guard position, not tackle. He started at right tackle in the HUDDLE. C - Nothing new. RG - Nothing new. RT - Lewis is competing there, not LT. Not surprising, because he started there at the HUDDLE.

There are several players with minor injuries. I am not sure at what point (severity) you want to mark them as injured. However, Galippo had back surgery and Morgan had a dislocated shoulder. It seems clear that both of them should be marked as injured. Also, I believe Luthur Brown's back injury is severe enough to be considered injured. I read a post on the forum (not necessarily reliable) that he is expected to be out about 8 weeks.
I usually play it by ear on when to note injuries. If I had to articulate when it's worth doing, I figure an injury that is severe enough to likely prevent a player from participating in the next game is worth noting. I'll add the injury notations to all three. Thanks

Thanks. Do you know this for sure?
On the "By Name" roster, I noticed that Jonathan DeAmaral, David Clinco, and Will Mullen aren't on the official roster as of 8/17/08. I figured I'd just wait a bit to make sure. In the past, I have removed walk-on players and they subsequently reappeared. I believe this happens sometimes because there can only be 105 players during fall camp, but that limit is removed after school starts.

I just finished reading the new depth chart. Here are a couple of questions:
1. Some players are missing (Mike Reardon, Matt Meyers, Curtis McNeal, Trey Henderson, Nick Perry, Luther Brown, Chris Gallipo and Shane Horton) I know Horton is redshirting (transfer) and McNeal and Perry are having trouble qualifying. How about the others.
2. I saw that the following players where included: (Billy O'Malley, Joe Houston, Jordan Congdon, Steve Gatena and Garrett Nolan) Are these players now on scholarship? I thought they were walk-on's but did not see other walk on's listed?
Hi John,
Matt Meyer (injury) and Curtis McNeal are listed on the "Depth-Offense" page, and Trey Henderson, Nick Perry, Luthur Brown (injury), Chris Galippo, and Shane Horton are listed on the "Depth-Defense" page.
There are lots of walk-ons shown in the depth chart. They're all green in color. If a walk-on is awarded a scholarship (i.e. Nick Garrat), then they are shown in orange like all of the other scholarship players.
Let me know where you're looking.
Thanks,
Joe
I just realized that you are referring to the new depth chart released by the coaches. Their depth chart often excludes 3rd and 4th level reserve players and walk-ons.

I understand why you have Campbell listed as a "may return." Scout shows him as a 2009 commit. It seems likely that he will return. I do not understand why you leave Simmons as a "may return." He has virtually no chance. I understand that you put an "X" through his name, apparently to show this. However, why not just remove him?
I agree with you to an extent on Simmons. I removed him from the "By Class" list, but I left him on the 2008 "Recruit" pages that historically show that he was a commit who did not enter. Eees ok?.

The more that I think about this, I believe that Scout is handling it correctly. I would remove him from the roster and put him with the 2009 commits. It is not perfect, but, in my opinion, is better than listing him as a "may return."
"May return" implies that he had been a member of the team, and he was not. It is not just a matter of semantics. By being on the roster, he should theoretically use up a year of eligibility and be a redshirt freshman or true sophmore next year. He will be neither. He will be a true freshman. That is different than those players that had already been on the roster and had academic issues. They used up a year of eligibility.
I'm not sure I'm consistent in the application yet (I was rushing through it tonight), but I tried to split the baby by creating two player icons for Campbell; one blue "may return" icon for the 2008 recruitment pages, and one red "commit" icon for the 2009 pages.

There is no perfect way to list Campbell in this situation. I am not sure if I agree with your present solution or not, but it seems reasonable.

I read in the forums that Perry has been practicing at SLB. Some of the posters in the forums are reliable and others are not. In this case, there is a picture of Perry being coached by Norton. That would imply that he was practicing at LB, not DE when the picture was taken. However, since Perry reported late because of the clearinghouse issues, it is likely that Carroll is just doing what he does with many new recruits at the beginning of fall camp (in this case later). He may be just trying him at a few positions to see where he seems to fit best. I do not have an opinion regarding whether you should move him to SLB or not. I am just giving you the information to help you decide.

I noticed that the star ratings were different than Scout. Have you started using ESPN's ratings? If not, I will be happy to point out the differences. I like Garry's site better now that it is affiliated with ESPN and like ESPN better than Scout in general. However, to be honest, both Scout and Rivals are much better at evaluating players. I do not know what, if any, obligation or pressure you have to use the ESPN rankings. However, if you have discretion, I recommend going back to Scout, or in the alternative, Rivals.
Hey Justafan. If they're different than Scout, it's either because I made a mistake or because Scout's rating changed after I entered the player info. At least that should be the case. I tried to use the ESPN ratings for a while due to our ESPN affiliation, but they dropped the 5-star system so I reverted to Scout's system. Which of my player ratings don't match Scout's?

There is an article by Brian Mathews that quotes Pete Carroll saying that Perry will start at SLB.
Moved. That matches the official depth chart for the Oregon game too. Thanks.

I'll keep an eye out for more info about this to see if it's meaningful. Thanks.

Awhile ago, Carroll mentioned that Corp was ahead of Mustain on the depth charts. Today, he mentioned that Green is now the backup. Based on that, I would have the order as Sanchez, Green, Corp and Mustain (without any tie).
Noted as to presumed order of entry, but I expanded the co-equal notation to include all three reserves per the official depth chart for Oregon. Thanks!

Shareece Wright has a hairline fracture of a vertebrae in his neck. He should have an injury notation.
Noted.

umm y is brian cushing not starting?
He is starting at MLB as Rey Maualuga has an injury notation. Morgan is starting at SLB where Cushing would normally start.

I read somewhere (I forget where) that Hazelton asked Carroll to redshirt this year. I am guessing it is because of his ankle.
Thanks. I saw this too, but I figured I'd see how it plays out before declaring him a "likely redshirt."
You forgot to make Hillier and Weiss scholarship players.
Thanks. I'll take care of that on Sunday. We have another walkon that I need to add too, QB John Manoogian.

I just read a post in the forum that Allen Bradford was not dressing for the game due to a hip injury. If you can confirm this, he should be marked injured.

You forgot to make Hillier and Weiss scholarship players, to correct the stars as stated above, and, I believe, to add an injury notation to Bradford.

Hazelton has not played in the last couple of games. Even if you are not sure that he should be a probable redshirt, it is clear that he should have an injury notation.

McKnight (toe), Bradford (hip) and Tyler (don't know) should all have injury notations. It is unlikely that any will be able to play on Saturday. CJ Gable and Stafon Johnson (getting over sinus infection) will get most of the carries and probably Broderick Green will get some. It is a good thing that USC is so deep at TB.

Both Rivals and Scout are showing Campbell as a 2009 commit. However, in the forum, Scott Schraeder said that he does not care what Scout says (Rivals was not mentioned), Campbell does not have an offer and has not committed. I trust Scott over Rivals and Scout, especially with him being so emphatic and knowing that Scout stated differently. Scout and Rivals may have been inferring from last year. I would go with Scott on this and remove Campbell as a commit and perhaps leave him as a possible return.
